Additional information

Hermann of Schauenburg served as Bishop of Minden from 1566 until his death in 1582, navigating the diocese through the confessional tensions that were reshaping northern German ecclesiastical territories in the post-Augsburg decades. Minden itself had been majority Lutheran in practice since the 1550s, leaving its Catholic bishop in the awkward position of issuing coinage for a city that largely rejected his religious authority.

The Reichsgroschen denomination was standardized under the 1559 imperial coinage ordinance, which attempted to bring order to the fractured groschen coinage circulating across the Reich.
