| Obverse description | Central field occupied by the arms of the Archbishopric of Salzburg — a plain escutcheon bearing a large convex roundel (the Salzburg orb) — surmounted by an ecclesiastical hat with dependent lappets and a decorative finial above. The initials W and T (for Wolf Dietrich), rendered in bold Roman capitals, flank the shield to left and right respectively. Small rosette or star ornaments appear at the upper and lower points of the square klippe flan, which is bordered by a continuous beaded inner frame. The entire composition is executed in the robust late-Renaissance hammered style characteristic of the Salzburg mint under Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau. |
