Additional information

The United Provinces of New Granada — the loose confederacy that preceded Bolívar's Gran Colombia — was in the final months of its existence when this coin was struck. Royalist forces had been pressing hard through the region since 1816, and the republican government was functioning under severe military and financial strain. Gran Colombia was formally declared in December 1819, rendering this issuing authority effectively obsolete within the same year the coin was produced.
