The Compagnie van Verre — the precursor organization absorbed into the VOC just one year after this coin was struck — issued this piece to pay crews and trading partners on its early voyages to the East Indies. Dutch merchants had been pooling capital for spice trade expeditions since 1594, and purpose-struck coinage was one mechanism used to manage accounts across multiple ships and outfitting companies operating simultaneously out of Amsterdam.
The VOC's formal charter from the States-General came in March 1602, rendering the Compagnie van Verre legally extinct within months of this coin's minting.
