Obverse description Unadorned bare bust of Rafael Carrera facing left, rendered in high relief in a neoclassical style by engraver Johann-Baptist Frener. The effigy is of fine workmanship, with naturalistic hair detail and a plain truncation at the neck. A circular legend surrounds the portrait, separated from the rim by a continuous beaded border. The engraver's signature FRENER F. appears incuse in small capitals below the neck truncation.

Reverse description The Guatemalan national coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting a quetzal bird perched atop a scroll before a facing view of two crossed rifles and two crossed swords, with mountains and a rising sun above the shield supported by laurel and oak branches tied at the base. A ribbon scroll at the top bears the national motto. The fineness designation and mint assayer initial appear at the lower left, the date and assayer mark at the lower right, and the denomination UN REAL is inscribed at the bottom, all separated from the dentilated rim by a raised border.
