| Obverse description | Central field bears the royal cipher of João I — the interlaced Gothic monogram IHS surmounted by a royal crown — all enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding legend, rendered in uncial script, reads IHNS DEI GRA REX PO, identifying the king as João I by the grace of God, King of Portugal. The design is characteristic of late medieval Iberian hammered coinage, with bold relief and an irregular flan typical of the period. |
