Reverse description The reverse presents a bold quartered cross with a plain cross pattée dividing the field into four equal quadrants, each displaying alternating castles and lions consistent with the arms of Castile and León, rendered in the rough, hand-struck style of cob coinage. An ornate tressure or border of pellets frames the irregular periphery. The partial Latin legend ET INDIARVM REX, denoting Philip II's sovereignty over the Indies, is visible along the rim, though characteristically incomplete due to the flan limitations of the macuquina production method. The overall strike exhibits the bold, irregular relief typical of late sixteenth-century Spanish colonial hammered coinage.
