Reverse description The crowned arms of Castile and León displayed at center, quartered with castles and lions and bearing a central escutcheon, flanked on either side by the Pillars of Hercules — the classical columns representing the Strait of Gibraltar. The crowned shield and pillars are rendered in fine relief typical of the Santiago Mint's milled coinage. The surrounding legend reads ·HISPAN·ET IND·REX·, with the mint mark So, denomination 1R, and assayer initials F·J· completing the inscription. A beaded border encloses the reverse design.
