Potosí's output during Fernando VII's reign was anything but stable. The mint changed hands repeatedly between royalist and patriot forces during the Wars of Independence — Potosí fell to patriot armies in 1810, was retaken by royalists in 1811, and continued to oscillate through the early 1820s. Coins struck here in Fernando's name were at times being produced under military occupation, their very existence contingent on which army controlled the Cerro Rico that week.
The assayer initial on these pieces is consequently a useful dating tool, as personnel changed with each shift in control.
