| Obverse description | Central device comprises the quartered royal arms of Castile and León within an ornate shield surmounted by a royal crown, flanked on either side by the denomination mark 'R' and assayer initial 'I' in the field. The entire design is encircled by a continuous Latin legend reading from the upper left. The shield displays the castles of Castile and lions of León in alternating quarters, with the overall composition characteristic of the pillar-and-arms coinage of colonial Mexico. The border is formed by a beaded ring. |
