Obverse description Central field displays the quartered royal arms of Castile and León within a pointed shield: the first and fourth quarters bear the castle of Castile, while the second and third quarters display the rampant lion of León. The shield is surmounted by a royal crown and enclosed within a beaded inner circle. The surrounding legend, partially visible due to the irregular flan, reads FERDINANDUS ET ELISABET, identifying the joint monarchs Ferdinand V and Isabella I. The coin is struck in the characteristic medieval hammered style, producing a somewhat irregular planchet with bold, if uneven, relief.
