Obverse description Crowned quartered shield bearing castles and lions in alternating quarters, struck in the cob (macuquina) style typical of colonial Spanish mints. The design is characteristic of the Royal Arms of Castile and León, with the castles and lions arranged in the four quadrants. The strike is irregular, as expected for hammered cob coinage of this period. Partial legends may appear around the periphery depending on the strike quality.
