Reverse description A bold plain cross divides the reverse field into four quarters, each alternately bearing the castles of Castile and the lions of León, forming the quartered arms of the Spanish Crown. The arrangement of castles and lions varies by die variety as documented by Calicó. A circular Latin legend enclosing the date 1643 runs around the periphery of the coin. The flan edges are irregular and clipped, consistent with the cob-style planchet preparation of the era.
