Obverse description Central device features the crowned Royal Arms of Spain displayed within an ornate baroque shield, quartered with castles and lions representing Castile and León, with a central escutcheon bearing the Bourbon fleur-de-lis. The shield is flanked on the left by the assayer's initial 'R' and on the right by the denomination mark '1', both in the field. A radiate royal crown surmounts the shield. The peripheral legend reads CAR • III • D • G • HISP • ET IND • R •, invoking Carlos III by the grace of God as King of the Spains and the Indies, rendered in Latin capital letters within a reeded border.
