The shield is flanked on either side by the Pillars of Hercules, each surmounted by a crown, representing the Strait of Gibraltar and the gateway to the New World. The peripheral legend reads HISPAN ET IND REX, with the mint mark NG, denomination 1R, and assayer initial M positioned to the left of the shield. Dot separators punctuate the legend throughout, and the design is enclosed within a milled border consistent with the obverse. |
