Additional information

Carlos I — Holy Roman Emperor Charles V — authorized silver coinage at the Mexico City Mint beginning in 1536, making it the first mint established in the Americas. The 1 Real belongs to the earliest "dos mundos" macuquin tradition, crudely struck on hand-cut planchets by hammer rather than screw press. These pieces circulated aggressively throughout New Spain and into the Pacific trade networks that were just beginning to open toward Asia in the 1540s.

The 1546 date places this coin within the final years before Carlos abdicated, which he did in stages between 1554 and 1556.
