Additional information

Paraguay's wartime coinage problem had no clean solution. By 1865, the War of the Triple Alliance had severed normal trade and drained the treasury, leaving the government to authorize the circulation of cut Bolivian 4 Soles pieces as fractional currency. Quarters of the host coin were officially sanctioned without requiring a countermark — an unusual concession that sets this type apart from the countermarked issues catalogued alongside it.

The date range spans the entire active phase of the war, during which Paraguay lost an estimated 60–70% of its population.
