Freiburg im Breisgau operated under Habsburg suzerainty during this period but retained considerable municipal autonomy in monetary matters, issuing its own small silver fractions well into the sixteenth century despite ongoing pressure from the Holy Roman Empire to standardize regional coinage under the Reichsmünzordnungen of 1524 and 1559. The "var." notations across all three major references suggest die variation not yet fully catalogued — unsurprising for a minor civic issue struck in such low silver that surviving examples rarely escape misattribution.
