Additional information

Freiburg im Breisgau operated its own mint under Habsburg overlordship during this period, striking small silver rappen for local circulation in the upper Rhine market towns. At this weight, the coin occupied the absolute base of the silver denomination ladder — fractional enough that surviving examples were typically hoarded in multiples rather than kept as singles, which partly explains why intact specimens are uncommon today.
