| Additional information |
Schwyz was one of the three founding cantons of the Swiss Confederation, and its cantonal coinage operated largely independent of federal coordination well into the nineteenth century. The 1780 issue came during a period when Swiss cantonal mints were under no obligation to harmonize their copper fractions with neighboring issuers, producing a patchwork of small denominations that circulated uneasily across cantonal boundaries. The HMZ 2-804e designation places this among a closely sequenced group of Rapen varieties distinguished by die differences that Hürlimann catalogued in detail.
