Obverse description The post-apartheid South African coat of arms occupies the central field, featuring a secretary bird with wings displayed surmounting a shield, flanked by two crossed assegais and a knobkierie, with a rising sun above and a motto scroll at the base reading 'KE E: XARRA KE' in the ǀXam language. The circular legend reads 'SOUTH AFRICA' to the left and 'UMZANTSI AFRIKA' to the right, with the date '2001' positioned at the top. The engraver's initials 'ALS' appear in the lower field beneath the coat of arms. The design is executed in high-relief proof finish against a mirror-polished field.
