Obverse description The post-1994 South African coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting a Secretary Bird with outstretched wings above a shield supported by two springbok, with ears of wheat and a tusk on either side, and a rising sun above. The engraver's initials ALS appear in the lower field beneath the arms. The legend SOUTH AFRICA and AFORIKA BORWA arcs respectively along the upper left and upper right periphery, flanking the date 2002.

Reverse description Four figures in traditional Tswana tribal dress stand in the central field, adorned with beaded necklaces and holding ceremonial implements. The denomination R1 appears in stylised form in the upper field, overlaid on a globe-like arc design. The inscription 1/10 OZ Au 999.9 is engraved along the lower exergue, with the mint mark CM to the lower right.
