| Obverse description | A finely detailed rendering of the King Protea (Protea cynaroides), South Africa's national flower, occupies the central field, depicted in high relief with its characteristic domed flowerhead and radiating bracts. The legend SOUTH AFRICA arcs along the upper periphery in bold raised lettering, while the date 2000 appears in the lower field. The engraver's initials ALS are incused at the lower centre, just beneath the flower. The mirrored proof field provides strong contrast against the frosted devices. |

| Reverse description | Three large oak wine barrels are depicted in diagonal perspective across the upper portion of the field, their faces engraved with Cape Dutch architectural motifs including a gabled manor house and a wine cellar facade, evoking the heritage of South Africa's winelands. A lush bunch of grapes with vine leaves fills the lower field, rendered in naturalistic high relief. The denomination R1 appears prominently in the left field, with the word PROTEA inscribed below it. The engraver's initials AM are positioned to the lower left of the denomination. |
