Obverse description The South African coat of arms is depicted centrally within a square frame, engraved by Arthur Sutherland. The national motto in the ǀXam language of the San (Khoisan) people reads ǃKE Eː ǀXARRA ǁKE, meaning 'Unity in Diversity.' The country name appears bilaterally flanking the arms, inscribed in Zulu (iNingizimu Afrika) to the left and in Xhosa (uMzantsi Afrika) to the right. The date of issue appears within the legend. The design reflects South Africa's post-apartheid constitutional identity and multicultural heritage.
