Obverse description The full coat of arms of the Republic of South Africa occupies the central field, featuring the quartered shield supported by a springbok and a gnu (wildebeest), with a protea plant at the base and a secretary bird displayed above the shield. The bilingual legend *SUID-AFRIKA*SOUTH AFRICA* arcs around the upper periphery in raised Latin letters, while the date 1988 appears prominently in the lower field. The engraver's initials ALS are visible at the lower left of the design. The mirror-like proof fields contrast sharply with the finely frosted relief elements.
