Additional information

The San people — southern Africa's oldest indigenous inhabitants, with genetic lineages traced back over 100,000 years — were an unusual choice for a South African commemorative series in 1998, coming just four years after the end of apartheid. The new democratic government was actively reframing national identity, and the San had been largely excluded from mainstream commemoration under the previous regime despite their deep archaeological and cultural presence across the subcontinent.

KM#178 is part of a four-coin San series issued that year in fractional gold.
