Additional information

Guatemala introduced the quetzal as its national currency in 1925, replacing the peso under a monetary reform overseen by the government of General José María Orellana — himself depicted on the one-quetzal note for much of the currency's subsequent history. The centenary commemorates a full century of that system, which pegged the quetzal at par with the U.S. dollar at introduction, a rate maintained with remarkable stability through the 1940s.
