The Baile del Son series was issued by the Banco de Guatemala as part of a broader program documenting indigenous Mayan ceremonial traditions threatened by decades of civil conflict. Guatemala's internal war, which ran from 1960 to 1996, ended just one year before this coin was struck — the timing was deliberate, with the series functioning as a kind of cultural inventory following the peace accords.
KM#285 is a low-mintage commemorative with limited secondary market depth, making accurate population data difficult to establish.
