| Reverse description | Green intaglio print overall. The central vignette presents the Banco de Guatemala headquarters building in Guatemala City, set against a mountain backdrop. To the left stands a tall stela with Maya glyphs, identified as 'LA STELA', and to the right a circular Maya calendar medallion. Harrison & Sons lost the Banco de Guatemala contract not long before the firm itself closed in 1997, making the mid-1990s issues among the last produced under that relationship. The company had printed Guatemalan notes for decades, and the P#97 falls near the end of that run.
The 1 Quetzal denomination has historically seen heavy circulation in Guatemala's largely cash-dependent rural economy, which means worn examples of this series are far more common than sound ones.
