Obverse description Central field depicts the papal arms of Urban VIII (Barberini), consisting of the crossed keys of Saint Peter surmounted by the papal tiara, with the Barberini family shield bearing three bees displayed prominently below. The design is rendered in the bold, somewhat crude style characteristic of hammered copper coinage of the period. A circular Latin legend surrounds the central device, reading VRBANVS VIII P MAX, identifying the issuing pontiff as Pope Urban VIII, Pontifex Maximus. The overall strike is irregular, consistent with hand-hammered production at the Ferrara mint. Floral or rosette stops punctuate the legend.
