| Obverse description | Central field displays the papal coat of arms — a heraldic shield surmounted by the papal tiara and crossed keys of Saint Peter, the traditional symbols of pontifical authority. The shield bears the armorial device of Pope Pius VIII. A circular Latin legend surrounds the central device, identifying the pontiff and his regnal year. The overall composition reflects the classicising neoclassical engraving style prevalent in early nineteenth-century Papal coinage. |
