Obverse description Central field displays the papal arms of Pius VII: a quartered shield bearing a cross of Jerusalem with PAX beneath on the dexter side, and diagonal stripes with three roundels on the sinister side, enclosed within a beaded border. The shield is surmounted by the papal tiara and flanked by the two large crossed keys of Saint Peter. A wreath of foliage frames the lower portion of the arms. The circular Latin legend PONTIFICATVS ANNO runs along the left and upper periphery, with the regnal year numeral at right, and the denomination QUATTRINO appears at the base of the coin.

Additional information

Pius VII spent nearly six years as Napoleon's prisoner — first in Savona, then Fontainebleau — before being released in 1814 and returning to Rome. The small copper issues that followed his restoration carried explicit symbols of papal authority partly as a deliberate reassertion of temporal power after that humiliation. The "large keys" variety of KM#1276.1 is distinguished from its companion type by the scale of the crossed keys on the reverse die, a detail that creates two collectible varieties within the same date range.
