Obverse description The entire field is occupied by a four-line Latin inscription in bold serif capitals reading PIVS / SEXTVS / PONTIFICEX / MAXIMVS, identifying the issuing pontiff. A horizontal line divides the papal title from the denomination QVATTRINO, which appears in the lower segment flanked by three small stars. A single star appears to either side of PIVS in the uppermost line. The coin is struck within a toothed or milled border that runs the full circumference.
