Obverse description The papal arms of Pope Paul V (Camillo Borghese) displayed on an ornate cartouche or shield occupying the central field, surmounted by the papal tiara and crossed keys of Saint Peter. The shield bears the Borghese family heraldic device. The surrounding circular legend reads PAVLVS·V· PONT·MAX·, identifying the pontiff as Pope Paul V, Supreme Pontiff. The coin is struck on a broad, irregular flan characteristic of early seventeenth-century papal copper coinage produced by the Rome Mint.
