| Obverse description | Central field displays the monogram of the Holy Face (Volto Santo), composed of an upright Roman numeral I flanked by a stylized S and a cursive L, forming a ligature symbolizing the sacred relic venerated at Lucca. The design is rendered in a bold, somewhat crude hammered style characteristic of small billon coinage of the period. A circular legend of bullet-separated Latin letters runs along the outer border, reading OTTO IMPERATOR, referencing Emperor Otto I who granted Lucca the right to strike coinage. The coin's irregular flan and variable strike are consistent with mid-sixteenth-century hand-struck production at the Lucca Mint. |
