Additional information

Innocent XI — Benedetto Odescalchi — was elected in 1676 after the previous conclave deadlocked for two years. His papacy was defined by relentless fiscal austerity: he slashed court expenditures, refused nepotism appointments, and redirected papal funds toward the Holy League's campaign against the Ottomans, culminating in the relief of Vienna in 1683. The Gubbio mint operated as a minor provincial facility within the Papal States, striking small copper for local circulation rather than prestige.

The quattrino was the lowest denomination in practical daily use. Copper issues from Gubbio of this period show considerable variation in flan quality.
