Obverse description The civic arms of Bologna, depicted as a lion rampant to sinister, holding an upright banner or standard in its forepaws. The device fills the central field of this small hammered copper piece, rendered in a bold, somewhat crude style characteristic of late 17th-century Bolognese minor coinage. No surrounding legend is present on this side, the design relying solely on the heraldic charge as an identifier of the issuing city.
