Giovan Battista Ludovisi ruled Piombino for only three years before dying without legitimate heirs, ending the Ludovisi family's hold on the principality and triggering a succession dispute that eventually passed the domain to the Boncompagni family. The quattrino was the smallest denomination in circulation, and copper issues of this brevity of reign survive in genuinely limited numbers — not by collector demand at the time, but simply because so few were struck across so short a window.
