Obverse description The obverse displays the rampant lion of Bologna, depicted passant-rampant to the left, holding an upright staff or banner in its forepaws, serving as the civic heraldic emblem of the city. Above the lion appears a ribbon or scroll bearing the legend LIBER, referencing the traditional freedom of Bologna. The design is set within a plain field, bordered by a partial beaded inner circle visible along the left rim. The overall style is consistent with the bold, somewhat primitive engraving characteristic of Bologna's civic copper coinage of the early eighteenth century.
