Obverse description A rampant lion passant to the left occupies the central field, rendered in a bold, somewhat naive style characteristic of small Italian feudal copper coinage of the mid-seventeenth century. The lion is depicted with a flowing mane, raised forepaws, and a curling tail, its body in profile against a plain, unadorned field. The coin's irregular flan, typical of hammered production, leaves the design without a formal border or legend.
