Obverse description Anchor depicted in bold relief at center of the flat cast flan, with a prominent crossbar and curved flukes at the base; the design is rendered in the archaic Etruscan style characteristic of early central Italian aes grave coinage. The field is plain and unlettered, with the anchor occupying the majority of the flan surface. Three pellets, denoting the quadrans denomination (one-quarter of the as), are arranged in the field. The coin exhibits the thick, irregular casting typical of aes grave production of the period.
