Additional information

Saudi Arabia's shift from the qirsh to the halalah as the primary subunit denomination during the 1970s reflected the monetary reforms accompanying the kingdom's oil-boom modernization push. The Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency — SAMA — was itself a relatively young institution when this coin was struck, having been established only in 1952, and still working through the practical challenges of metrication and decimal alignment across a population with deeply embedded familiarity with older denominations. The dual designation on this type was a direct concession to that transitional reality.
