Naser al-Din Shah's early coinage reforms of the 1850s were driven in part by the humiliation of Persian silver coinage being routinely rejected in bazaar transactions due to inconsistent milling and suspected debasement under his predecessors. The qiran denomination had been stabilized only a decade earlier under monetary restructuring tied to pressure from European trading partners demanding reliable specie for commerce along Persian Gulf routes.
KM# 839 represents one of the transitional Tehran mint issues before the 1876 introduction of mechanized minting equipment — hand-struck, with the die alignment irregularities that characterize the period.
