Obverse description An oval intaglio vignette at left carries a three-quarter-profile portrait of David Dale facing right, with the bank's heraldic arms positioned at lower centre amid guilloche underprinting. A facsimile signature of the General Manager appears to the right of the portrait, while the denomination numeral '1' is set within guilloche panels at the far right, and the serial number is repeated twice across the face.

Reverse description The central vignette presents a fine line-engraved view of the Royal Bank of Scotland Head Office in Edinburgh, with a secondary view of the Chief Office in Glasgow placed to the right.
