Egypt's National Police Day commemorates January 25, 1952, when officers of the Ismailia police force refused a British order to surrender their weapons and barracks, resulting in a battle that killed over forty Egyptian policemen. The date was later reclaimed by the Mubarak government as a public holiday, then became permanently charged when the 2011 revolution launched on the same day — a deliberate provocation by protesters who chose it precisely because of its anti-authoritarian resonance. The 71-year figure places this issue in an awkward anniversary, neither a round number nor an obvious milestone.
