Additional information

Muhammad Metwali al-Sha'rawi was Egypt's most widely watched Islamic scholar, his televised Quranic commentary drawing audiences across the Arab world from the 1970s onward. He died in June 1998, and this commemorative followed within months of his death — one of a long series of Egyptian gold pounds issued by the Central Bank to honor cultural and religious figures, a program that accelerated noticeably through the 1990s.
