Additional information

Issued as part of the FAO's global campaign to promote food security and agricultural development, this coin was one of dozens commissioned by central banks worldwide through the 1970s at the FAO's direct instigation. Sudan's participation reflected the country's ambitions as a potential breadbasket for the Arab world — a project heavily backed by Arab League investment following the 1973 oil boom. Those agricultural development schemes largely failed to materialize at the scale envisioned.

The 30-gram copper-nickel format was unusually heavy for a circulating issue, and most examples left commerce quickly.
