| Obverse description | Right-facing draped bust of Queen Elizabeth II, depicted in the second definitive effigy as modelled by Arnold Machin, wearing a tiara and pearl earring. The legend QUEEN ELIZABETH THE SECOND arcs around the upper periphery, while the date 1987 appears in the lower field. The design is framed by a fine beaded border, and the deeply mirrored proof fields provide strong contrast against the portrait. |

St. Martin is one of Jersey's twelve parishes, each of which received its own dedicated pound coin in the 1987 gold proof parish series — a program that produced low-mintage struck pieces across all twelve simultaneously. Jersey's parish system dates to the Norman administrative divisions established after 1066, making it among the oldest continuously functioning local government structures in the British Isles.
