Churchill's relationship with the Channel Islands was tested during the German occupation of 1940–1945, when London's decision to demilitarize and abandon the islands — made without consulting the inhabitants — remained a source of quiet bitterness for decades. Alderney suffered more than any other island; its entire civilian population was evacuated, and slave laborers were brought in to build fortifications. The island was not liberated until May 1945.
This issue is one of several gold fractionals produced by Alderney commemorating Churchill, struck to quarter-sovereign dimensions.
