Additional information

Alderney's gold issues occupy a peculiar corner of British Crown Dependency coinage — legally valid tender under Guernsey authority, though produced exclusively for the collector market. Drake's circumnavigation of 1577–1580 was officially a privateering operation sanctioned by Elizabeth I, who took a personal share of the plunder from the Golden Hind — a fact the Crown was careful never to publicize at the time, given the diplomatic fallout with Spain it would have caused.
